4hp powerhead interchangeable with 8hp?

Hello all,

I have a 4hp Johnson outboard (in the 80's I believe), that has a better bottom end than an 84' 8hp Johnson outboard that I just purchased. At a quick glance, these motors seem to be almost identical, and I was wondering if I could swap the powerhead from the 8hp, to the 4hp lower end. I am going to verify the years, but just wanted to know if anyone out there knew for sure if they are the same bottom end?

Thanks in advance,

George

You're gonna have to post the model numbers, both of those motors used for a lot of years.

They certainly are interchangeable for some years but the BRP parts catalog does not list the Deluxe 4 hp for 1984, only the version without reverse gear, although it was available I believe in some markets

Exactly the same in 1986 and1987 !

THe 4hp/4.5hp (Deluxe full gearshift model) uses a different mid-section than the 8, but the lower units are the same.

Thank you for the replies. Both motors have the Forward/Neutral/Reverse gearshifter, so it seems like the midsection may be different then? I will check the years tonight though to make sure.

Thanks again,

George
