Just started working on a 1990 4hp 2 stroke Evinrude Yachtwin. No manual but I am going to purchase one.

I have spark.
I have fresh fuel coming out the fuel pump when cranked over.
How can I tell if I need to rebuild the carb?

This engine came with a sailboat and hasn't been cranked over in at least 5 years.

Will the spark jump 1/4" blue bolt w/tester? Just holding the plug to ground won't show the quality of the spark and may be poor. If you spray a bit of premix in the carb throat and it fires for a couple seconds, it's likely a fuel delivery issue..

Go to the top of this forum, the Top Secret File, and do "Awakening a sleeping outboard" and, if needed, "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find. :)

Thanks. I did get it running. Now in my trashcan I have lots of oil. I read awakening a sleeping outboard very helpful. I will follow the directions for the lower unit and see if we can't get the oil leak fixed.

I also have a 4 hp and often run it in a trashcan. It's surprising how much oil (which is actually from the exhaust) ends up floating on the water's surface. But that is normal.
You should make sure that your lower unit is not leaking, but I would guess you're actually looking at exhausted unburnt oil, and nothing to worry about. When you change your lower unit oil, if the old oil is not milky looking, you're good to go.

Very much doubt it's from the lower unit. as said it is most likely from the exhaust. However lower unit should be drained and re-filled anyway. Check condition of the oil when draining.

Thanks. I don't have water shooting out from anywhere either so I'm guessing I need a new pump. I have the manual on order and don't want to start taking things apart until I get that.
