Can antone give some input on the slow speed neddle valve for a 4906b, 1969 evinrude lightwin? I have done extensive rework of the old kicker but when starting it, it floods. Rund good for a while at 1/2 - 3/4 throttle, then dies. Fuel pump has been rebuilt, as well as a carb kit.
The only thing I noticed during cleang and rebuilding, was the slow speed needle valve is not pointed, rather it is squared on the end [part # 312823] is this a factory design, or has it been droped or over seated, and broken?
Also getting an occasonl shock when standing on wet ground and contacting the throttle lever [ side mounted] and the lower motor cover.
Please help!

The needle valve should come to a fine point on the tip. Sounds like yours is broken off. The shock is probably caused by a frayed plug wire or bad connection (which will also impede the performance of the motor).

One needle is a sharp point and the other a dull point but I don"t remember which is which. Try running it in the dark of night to see where your spark is jumping to ground. Bad spark will certainly add/cause your slow speed problems. Great little engines. Best of luck. Rick.

The slow speed needle is pointed on the end and the high speed is blunt.

Well, the opinions are about 50/50 on the needle valve point?? Far as the shock, new wires, plugs, condensers, points, coils, plug boots. was carefull to make sure none of the wires grounded against anything.
There is a "grounding strap" mounted on the botttom of the armature plate, that mounts on the wire retainer clip screw, but have no idea what its supposed to make contact with. Its made of spring steel and has a little "kick" on one end and the mounting screw goes thru the other.
Any ideas?

Discovered that strap myself this year. It is supposed to rub on the brass armature plate. If you could show pictures of your "squared" needle it would be helpful. Your description is hard to interpret. Good call on what you did with the electrics. Money well spent IMO. Rick.

Well, this is my first attemp to attache a photo, here on Iboats, we will see how it goes!
The fatter needle is the High Speed, #315174 it has a sharp point. The other one WAS the one in question, #312823 that has a squared tip [not needle like].
I'm a little lost now, as I received a PM from a supplier, that has one in stock [NOS]. They stated it ALSO has a flat end! I was kinda hopeing for that, as an easy fix. Now I dont know what way to turn. I suppose, tear the carb down and check the float level and inlet valve, [thought iI did, during the rebuild, but....]
Thanks for the ground strap advice, I removed the screw that holds the wire clamp and strap down, turned the ground over and it runs on top of the brass armature plate, like it was made there! woopee! Hope that fixes the shock, I will see if I can get this thing to run!

..any chance someone put the needles in the wrong holes? normally the ls needle has the finer tip to dial in idle, and the hs needle is somewhat blunter. ( i only mention that because i did some carb work on an 18hp....and the needles were in the wrong holes)

I think your needles look not bad. A little ridge on the sharp point one but I think it would still do its job although the manuals say if you can see that ridge then replace the needle. It appears they have different threads so I doubt you could get them into the wrong holes and get them to thread all the way home. You could however get them to thread into the packing washers and think they are all the way home so be careful. I would think the knobs would tell you by being too far out if the needles were in the wrong holes. It is not uncommon for someone to clean a carb. more than once to get it right. Rick.

The needles indeed have differant threads. One fine and one corse. Differant needle length, and the carb set back would show in the knobs.
Maybe the boss gasket fell off during assembly or maybe a stuck float?

Just a note to thank everyone for the help! This is a great forum.
Have rebuilt and cleaned [again] the carb. nothing jumps out, as out of place or abnormal. Soaked a while in a carb bath, cleaned with B12 and used compressed air to clear all raceways and passesages. Reassembled with same gaskets, oiled the float neddle, adjusted the float [again].
Have purched a parts carb on Fleabay, and will compair the needle valves, to my original, and use the best ones. Have adjusted the sync, but the Cam is old and a little worn, new follower as well.
Still cant figure why it wants to flood though!
