Hi there .. I'm a 'newbie' :)

I'd like recomendations as to which 4 hp engine might have the best power to weight ratio,

I imagine it is a 2 stroke (used) but some of the eBay research I have done shows some old 'mercs' at over 50 lbs and that will be to much for my very light weight tender (dinghy)

What is /are the lightest 4hp that was/were manufactured? Age is not a problem, (as long as spare parts are available) it will only be used 10 hrs or so a year

I'll be gratefull for any comments

Re: 4hp engine weight

The Johnson/Evinrude 4.5/4 Deluxes (4.5 was before the hp rating change) are 49 pounds, and they have F-N-R, and the gearcase from the larger engines, and all. The older Johnnyrude 4s, which lack the neutral and reverse gears will be a bit lighter still.

Re: 4hp engine weight

I weighed my Merc 39 (3.9 hp) quite a while ago, and I think it was 42 lbs (I could be wrong, but that's what I remember). That has F-N-R. I'd weigh it for you, but I just sold it a couple of weeks ago and bought a Merc 60 6 hp in it's place.

Just a couple of other as I'm looking at a Cabelas catalog:

Nissan 4 hp - 57.3 lbs
Mercury 3.5 - 43 lbs
Mercury 4 hp - 55 lbs
Mercury 5 hp - 56 lbs
Mercury 6 hp - 55 lbs

All those wieghts were for short shaft models.

Hope that helps.
