48hp johnson dies at idle

i just purchased a boat with a 1987 48hp johnson motor. motor runs great at every thing but idle. it shakes badly and "floods out" after a couple minutes. it also starts hard-i have to put it in fast idle to get it to start. hoping someone can give me some things to try before i have to visit a dealer.

Probably blocked idle jet or capillaries. The carburetor is fairly straightforward with fixed jets - nothing to adjust. You can rebuild it with a kit from your J/E dealer; part #396701, or the aftermarket one from iboats 18-7222.
