having trouble with loss of power, checked gas , clean,no water. rebuilt carb last year, squirts fine with throttle advance and idles but vert rough, vacume at idle is 17 1/2" to 19 1/2" with rapid fluctuation, rpm @ 700, increase rpm to 1000 vac. gauge stays at about 19" but still vibrating. with # 1 cylinder at tdc rotor is about 1/2" before #1 tower, the timing lite shows advanced beyond the 10 degree mark maybe 25 or more degrees??? I never set the timing way advanced and it has not been touched by anyone. I bought this new in 1985, the boat and motor only have 90 hours operating time on the meter. The plugs are slightly black and slightly wet, Last year rel\placed points with igniter conversion because of no spark, ran fine on hose, did not put in water. This year started right up but started to overheat, replaced pick up pump and missing exhaust flapper and suspect thermostat and exhaut elbow gasket. So the main question is why is the timing so out of whack, could the timing chain have jumped a tooth? The temp. while testing is 140 degrees, new plug wires, rotor and cap. the serial # is 6846143 470R PS: the timing advances with added throtle and if I move the dist. to 8 degrees or 4degrees the motor runs worse. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks greg

Whatever became of the missing exhaust shutter?......
Have you checked the dist weights to make sure they are not stuck?....
The max advance should only be 28* or so.....
I think you have messed something up when you installed the pertronix......
I'd go back to the points & see if you can get it to spec......;)

Did you check the cylinders for any signs of water intrusion?.....
I really doubt it jumped a tooth......;)

Re: 470r timing problem

Hi HM As for the flappers, Ipulled the drive, not in bellows or into lower exhaust tube in boat, nothing in top half of drive ( turned it over, tapped on grass) removed bottom and replaced complete water pump, found impeller vanes at pickup screens and removed them. It does not overheat anymore !!! Advance is working, i can see it with the timing lite. As for the igniter, It ran with no shaking and smooth acceleration last year. The cylenders are dry, no water.
