When tearing down my 470 I took lots of pics for reference. Take a look at this pic and tell me what's wrong. The PO made a huge error and now I know why. I believe Mercruiser has an error in their manual.

?????? I see a wire nut....

Nice lifting rig by the way. That must be some heavy duty rope.

Are you referring to the orientation of the head gasket? Yeah the manual does not match the "front" stamp on the new OEM gasket.

BING ! BING! BING! We have a winner. It took me about an hour of orienting the head gasket; the word "front", and the manual before I could figure that one out. The pic in the manual made the orientation clear. You think Mercruiser would release a tech bulletin on the "front up" vs "front down" issue.

I don't get it. Those rounded-off triangular shaped holes look like they're matched up with the same shaped holes in the block. I followed the manual when I rebuilt mine and didn't agonize over the orientation. Now you're making me wonder....

What happens if it's upside down?

Okay. I've got the#8 service manual. "Position new cylinder head gasket on cylinder block with the word "front" (stamped on gasket) toward front of engine facing "down" toward cylinder block."

I'm sure that's what I would have done unless it was obvious that things didn't line up. Was that correct or not?

I'm looking at the picture in the manual. Large tabs on the fuel pump side, just like in your pictures.

I don't get this one either. Head gaskets usually only fit one way.

Re: 470 Teardown - hat's wrong with this picture?

Those tabs would be sticking way out to the side of the cylinder head and would crushed when you install the exhaust manifold if you flipped the gasket the other way. Just went out and looked at my cylinder head. No tabs sticking out on the exhaust manifold side.

I looked at some schematics on a mercruiser parts website. The gasket is oriented exactly as it is shown in the manual.

Someone explain to me what I'm missing.

It does, only on mine the "front" stamp was on top, not the bottom. The only way to get the stamp down was to put that end on the back, so you could either have the stamp down with the front on the back or the stamp up with the front on the front. Either way according to the manual it would be wrong. As I recall it fit pretty well either way (looked symmetrical to me), so I put the front to the front, and the stamp up rather than down. That was 4 years ago and all is well. It does get rather confusing though. Love those 470's LOL!

Using the manual's image (page 86) as a guide; you'll note the extra "hole" in the HG by #4 cylinder by the alignment dowel. The forward dowel does NOT have the "hole". Also look at the orientation of the large vs small water passage holes on the intake side of the HG. Large holes aft; small holes forward.

As simple as understanding my wife................

Yeah assumed "front" meant front, ignored the up/down in the manual and that is how I did it.

I'm still trying to figure out how, in 20 years, my wife has been 100% right on every issue, argument, disagreement that has ever come up. You know the saying, "Happy wife, stay the hell out of my man cave 'cause I'm getting drunk all up in there and smoking a G-D cigar!!!" :D

Here's another puzzle piece; head after clean-up, prior to re-assembly. Note coolant ports. Front is "up" on this pic (note front hose bib)
