454 OMC King COBRAS

First off let me start off by saying I am not a mechanic and everything I would have to do to the boat would be done by a professional at professional rates.

I have a 1993 Chris Craft Crowne with twin 454s OMC King COBRA Outdrives with the Cone Clutch. The engines have 250 HRs on them and do not appear to be the spit fire ignition ones. The out drives work perfectly and have always been welled maintained.

I am going to putting some money into the boat for cosmetic reasons. The boat is in overall great shape but I always worry about the drives.

Worse case scenerio, ballpark, how much would it cost to change out the drives and engine components or possible replace engine. I could seel my 454s and Outdrives.

I know you cannot get me even close, but ball park would be great. I do not want to spend any money on the boat if the bill coming due is a fortune.

$40,000 (not a typo) minimum for a couple of new 8.1 engine packages with dual prop outdrives (No 454's any more). That is just the packages, doesn't include any labor to install or other things that may need done.

Someone must have changed the ignition. All models of 92 and 93 7.4L engines appear to have come stock with electronic (Spitfire) ignition.......So you're lucky if some previous owner changed it.

About 3 or 4 years ago I priced buying a brand new VP 8.1L DUOPROP AND a Mercury 8.1L Bravo III package to repower from the 460 King Kobra I had installed in my 1987 FourWinns 211 liberator.

A dealer in Portland OR quoted a (not installed) retail price of about $24,000 (for either one) . I think Installation was somewhere around $1500-2500


I wouldn't want to think about twins!

Ouch.......

The engines were swapped a few years ago and only have minimal hours on them. I have never seen the spitfire logo on the new engines, just the King COBRA label. Normally it says Spitfire on the sides, but could have missed them. My guess is that when it was repowered they found an alternative as they new about the problem at the time. Is there anyway to do a retrofit for just the lowers or any other alternative? I really do not need new engines.

Not really. The KC had it's own transom shield and everything.
