I am looking at buying a 96 25ft Mariah which has a 454 multi port fuel injected engine. I had 305 on 20 Ft in past which did well on the gas. I know I will use more gas with a 454, but I dont want it to be a gas hog all the time. I know it depends alot on the usage (tube ski) but was trying to get any input back on engine.

Ditto!

But the 454 has a long history of a powerful engine with gobs of torque...for pulling tubies.

Tubes don't require much power, but 25 footers do. Does not matter what you use, fuel use will be significantly higher with a jump from 21 to 25 ft.

Seriously, if fuel usage is a big issue, you do not want a big block like this

I would say, if fuel usage is a big issue, you don't want to own a boat.:)

But seriously, if you're going from a 305 to a 454 in a boat... it will be like going from 4 mpg to 3 mpg, or at least that order of magnitude.

I have a 24' boat with a 454. I wouldn't want anything smaller. Seriously, figure out the difference in the $ worth of gas you would use in a year and the difference isn't worth talking about.

Re: 454 engine

I went from a 21 footer with a carbureted 305/Alpha, to a 25 footer with a 7.4MPI/Bravo3. The 25 footer uses about twice as much gas to go the same distance. It is a lot more boat to push around so it requires more power, which requires more gas.

At cruising speeds, the 25 footer would use the same amount of gas with a 305, as it does with a 454. The 454 is simply a luxury for: getting on plane, higher cruising speeds, and higher top speed. At cruise in my 25 footer, I burn about 12 gallons per hour and the 454 makes about 150 HP in doing so. The 21 footer probably only needed 80 HP to cruise at the same speed.
