45 hp Chrysler no power at full throttle

Hi there,I'm a new guy here so bare with me....<br />I've got a 1976 45 horse Chrysler and was out today and while we were cruising along at full throttle the rpms started to drop and got to the point where she wouldn't even idle.Adjusted the idle speed high enough to get us back to shore.Any ideas as to what went wrong or what to check now? Thanks

Hello Robert and welcome to iboats. Best to start with rebuilding the fuel pump and the carb. I would start with the fuel pump because it is the easiest. NAPA sells both kits. Fuel pump kit is a 18-7808 and cost is about 10 dollars. Carb kit is 18-7037 and costs 15 bucks. Instructions come with the carb kit but not the fuel pump. The main thing to replace in the fuel pump is the diaphram and main gasket that comes with the kit. I would get a clymer or seloc service manual or go to www.chryslercrew.net and buy a downloadable parts and factory service manual. Also replace the spark plugs with champion L82C plugs. These things are pretty easy to do and if you have any problems post back here.<br /><br />Good Luck

eurolarva gives good advice, but before you get into it, do a compression check and spark check.

had same problem, and replaced the diaphram on the pump and took off the carb and removed all the liquid from the bowl. works great!

Well thanks for all the info but when i finally got her started today in a drum i found that she's hitting on only one cylinder.Pulled the plug wires while running.Now what do i do?

Start tracing the wires from the bad cylinder back. Look for shorts in the insulation. Try swapping coils and see if the problem follows the coil. A service manual would be a good thing to have now.
