I have been having an ongoing issue for the past 2 seasons. Last year the engine was very hard to start when cold, after warming up you could shut it off and restart it throughout the day. The next day same thing, terrible to start cold. As the season went on the worse it got. This year I cant get it to start at all. I have had it to two different mechanics, spent lots of $$ for their expertise, to no avail. I now have the boat home. I have 180 compression, crisp blue spark, fresh gas, and fuel to the injectors (which were rebuilt) I have all the basics, but can't get it to fire. I can get it to back fire through the throttle body, but thats it. I feel I am missing something simple? Any help would be super appreciated!! The engine model is 43FBPBYC and serial is To1306195. This was the volvo/OMC transition year. Thank you, in advance

Rebuilt fuel injectors are of no use whatsoever if they are not being triggered. If there is no fuel, a crisp spark is also a waste. A backfire indicates a timing issue. And since two mechanics couldn't figure out what's wrong, then you really need to seek out a shop that hires "technicians" rather than a couple of dudes that call themselves mechanics. The engine needs fuel, air and spark and all of that needs to happen at the right time. If one of those events is missing, the engine can't run. So step #1 would be to pull a couple of spark plugs and see if they are wet or dry. If wet, you don't have spark. If dry, there is no fuel.

The injectors are pulsing like they should be when cranking(which means they are being triggered) I've pulled the 1,3,5 plugs, they are all the same. Gapped to .045. But have a very light black soot film on them, and have a very slight gas smell on them. I seems the timing is off. I've found tdc for #1, rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder, and timing marks are lined up. When cranking I have tried turning the distributor to get it to fire, but all that I can get is a backfire. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks a lot Don. I have already been through that whole diagnostics chart with everything checking out within specs. I changed both the ignition relay and fuel pump relay. As before the relays would just lick and i would be getting good fuel spray from the injectors and then nothing, just the relay click. Now I have a constant pulsating spray when cranking. The only thing i haven't tried is to unhook the

I tried starting the boat with the MAP disconnected and still get the same results, no start. Totally lost......

Re: 43FBPBYC will not start...GRRR

Im still having problems with my 97 VP 4.3Gi (TBi) 43FBPLKD too

Replaced almost the same things 1952m38 has, still after 24 hours, super hard cold starting. :( Warm starts are a dream. Cold starts, a nightmare.

The ONLY thing I can think of at this point, is the Vapor Separating Tank. Maybe the float inside is sticking? Somebody else on the web had a clogged cooling line going TO the VST that caused problems accelerating. The last owners of my boat did have an impeller fall apart and I was fishing pieces out of the thermostat for months.

Thats the only other thing left that I can think of. Ive replaced fuel pumps, filters, tune ups, IAC motors, throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor... Im at the end of my rope. :blue:
