40hp won't idle

I did the carbs and thermostate. What i've noticed is if I put my hand over the upper carb I feel vacuum but the engine does not respond at all. If I put my hand over the lower carb the engine will die. What's wrong with the upper? I have spark.<br /><br />thanks

I also have good compression on both cylinders. Although, I Do hear almost like a rubbing sound but it sounds like air being squeezed. Reeds?

Not very likely at all if you're feeling a vaccum when you cover the top carb.<br />Make up a spray bottle with fuel/oil mix and spray it into the top carb while the engine is running. Does it then start to fire?

Paul, are you telling me if I totally block off the upper carb that there should be no change in the performance of the engine?

If giving more gas results in no change, and if you're positive you have spark in that cylinder, I wonder about overfueling (plugged or misadjusted air passages in idle circuit, and or soggy or misadjusted carb float) <br /><br />Would help if you identified the motor year.<br /> <br />Does it have an idle speed adjustment, or fixed air orifice at top front of carb?<br /><br />Will the motor run at speed? If so, further suspect gunk in idle circuit. There are some mighty small openings in there...

The year of the engine is somewhere between 94-96. <br /><br />It does have a idle speed adjustment, 3 turns out.<br /><br />The motor runs fine once it hits the intermediate circuit. I sprayed carb cleaner through the 3 small holes underneath the plastic cover, new gaskets were installed too. I checked the primer and it's not leaking by. The primer ball stays hard once primed. When engine runs I do see droplets of fuel come to the surface, quite a bit actually. <br /><br />AHHH!!! I can't figure it out!

Are you sure you don't have a sticky or soggy float, allowing flooding of the top cylinder? Pull the plugs after running for a few minutes and see how they look. If overfueling, top should be soaked, bottom tan and just a little damp. <br /><br />Even with a clean, properly calibrated carb, irregularity in synch and link of the two carbs can cause rough idling. With the engine idling, loosen the screw that holds the two carb linkages together. If idle improves, then linkage was too tight, causing butterfly's to be out of time. Snug linkage up and tighten with engine running so they open at precisely the exact same time. Helps to take breather box off front of carb to watch the plates in this process.<br /><br />Found the post below on carb adjusting - maybe something in here will strike a cord...<br /><br /><br />(Carburetor Adjustments) <br />(J. Reeves)<br /><br />Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns. <br /><br />Setting the high and low needle valves properly: <br /><br />NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.<br /><br />(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting. <br /><br />(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting. <br /><br />When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.<br /><br />--------------------<br />ReevesJ32@aol.com<br /><br />30+ Years With OMC
