I have a 40 hp Evenrude Model E40ELCO (1985 I think) that starts OK but will not run but a few seconds untill it stalls, as if it is starving for fuel. If I push the key to choke it every second or two it will stay running. Any ideas on cause and recomendation on repairs. Thanks in advance.

It is an 85. You might need a link and sync., increase idle speed, adjust you slow speed needle. First thing I would do is check your rpm and see if it is within spec. Has it always done this or is it just recently? Did you do any work on it that might have caused it to run different? Can you keep it running if you lift up the throttle while in neutral? Best of luck. Rick.

Did not use motor since last spring due to health. After last use I ran all the fuel out of line, then turned motor over about 90 (+or-) days apart to keep it from locking up. Did no work on it. Lifting throttle while in neutral will not keep it running without pushing the key to activate the primer solenoid every few seconds, more frequent pushing with throttle up. Not sure I know what a "link and sync." is or how to addjust slow speed needle correctly.

sounds like you need to disassemble and clean your carb. Carb kit may be necessary as well.

Re: 40hp Will not stay running

Well I would not recommend turning it over 90 times with no fuel as the lubrication is in your fuel mix unless you have VRO which in that case you might have filled your carbs. with oil and no gas. By pushing in the key your adding a burst of fuel each time. If that works then your not getting enough fuel through your carbs. to keep it running. Check your plugs to insure they are in good shape but I too think you would be well advised to clean and re kit your carbs. Link and sync will be required after carb. re-install. You will need an original OMC service manual for your model and year to get the link and sync. instruction. Follow it to the letter and I think you'll notice a real change. A manual will help you in many other aspects of normal repair and maintenance as well. Glad your heath has improved enough to get you back to your boat. It would have been nice if ran the same as when you put it away though. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 40hp Will not stay running

Thanks for the info. Will procure the "original OMC service manual" and give your suggestions a try, don't see how I could make it much worse than it is. By the way, I only turned it over a few times at 90 day entervals, guess I could have stated it better the first time. Thanks again for your help.

Well it might have been me misreading it. I feel a lot better now. It could get much, much worse. What we think you have right now is a fuel delivery problem. That is a heaven sent problem compared to things like low compression, loud knock, jumping out of gear, etc. Do get the manual and carb kits and take your time and enjoy the experience. I always enjoy working on these motors unless I'm in a hurry. Then I hate it. Rick.
