I'm new to these forums. Can anyone help?
My 96' 40 hp mercury tracker pops out of gear when its in reverse. A friend suggested it might be a gear problem. It makes a grinding noise as it's doing this. Any ideas?

hello normally when its to the point of jumping out the gear and dog is toast. double check your linkage adjustments and your shifting method. never ever slowly place it in gear. the shift needs to be firm and quick for both ways.
good luck and let us know
