40hp Merc classic 2 stroke 4 cylender
starts like a charm in fast idle but will not idle down enough to put moter in gear. I have changed the gas, tried carb cleaner changed the plugs, gleaned the gas filter, tried pumping the prim to keep it running to no success.
any ideas....... :(

Re: 40hp out board no idle

What year is the engine?

Make sure the throttle plates in the carb throats are fully closed at idle. A too lean of fuel/air mixture will cause the engine to spit and sputter and ultimately stall.

You might need to take the carbs of the engine and do a full carb cleaning. That means disassembling the carbs, soaking in liquid carb cleaner, drying and blowing out all the orfices with compressed air, and then reassembling with new gaskets.

If your reeds are old and worn then they can prohibit you from running a low idle. At what RPM do you have to keep it at so it wont stall.

These are a few things to look at
-Andy

Assuming it ran before you'll need to open the carbs and clean the low speed circuit thoroughly. Sounds like something got passed the filter.

It may just need a link and sync. A manual will tell you how to do this.
