I just purchased a boat with a 1996 mercury 40ELO serial # 0G313395. Want to replace water pump-should I replace impeller too, or its all one unit? Pretty mechanically inclined, but boats are new to me. Aslo trim motor doesnty work-I hear clicking in motor when buttons are pushed but nothing happens. Previous owner said he thinks brushes are gone in motor. Should I rebuild motor, replace? What should I check for to see what problem really is? Something I can do myself? Thanks in advance for help and suggestions.

Also meant to ask about what kind of cost I am looking at? Thanks, Mike

Re: 40hp mercury water and trim pump

I don't know all that much about power trim but for the water pump and upper rebuild kit will go for 25 - 45 dollars on iboats and at the dealer it could go as high as $110 at least thats what they wanted for mine and yes when you do a water pump the most inportant thing to replace is the impellier. Make sure to place all the seals and that the pump it self is not worped and that its level. Make sure you don't loose the key way when you take the pump out. A good investment would be a shop manual if you never done it before.
