I've got a 89 mercury 40hp 4cyl that I cant seem to fix exhaust coming out near tilt area under powerhead.I replaced gasket twice even tried rtv .No change. Are they known for warping exhaust plate or the block itself? I'm stumped, any help would be great!

I have a 1992 version of the same motor, not sure where you are refering to. Any chance of a pic to see where your leak is ??

Start it on a hose.----Spray some oil into the carburetors.-----Extra smoke might help pinpoint the leak.-----I doubt those hefty castings are warped.=====Have you replaced exhaust cover gaskets ?

Yes I've replaced all gaskets on powerhead and the exhaust plate gasket. It has to be leaking around exhaust exit of powerhead ,it instantly puffs out front when first started

Perhaps there is a hole corroded in a casting.----Should be easy to find.

My '93 Merc V6 has a rubber hose from the block to the cowling for the idle exhaust relief. If this hose leaks, exhaust gets under the cowling.

Do you have something similar?

I dont think mine has that hose, just the pisser hose. Only thing I can thing is the connection between powerhead and exhaust plate.
