g'day all

Ok i have a 40hp Johnson 1974 model no 40EL74S,

Now the pump case no in the catalog is different to the one i have in this motor the no i have is 325404. I ordered a new water impeller 0386165 the one in the catalog but its way to large for this pump case any ideas on the pump no i need for this?

also i noticed 2 gaskets one on the top and one on the bottom of the plate do i need to get new ones of these or can i use form a gasket instead?

When i brought this motor there was a bent bit of metal for the drivepin, it snapped on me and ordered a new drivepin 0305475 but it seems to be abit loose and i im worried about it falling out should it be abit loose like this or dose it need to be super tight?
here are some pics cheers nouse!!

Parts list for your motor is at http://shop.evinrude.com/ with the correct parts. Your Evinrude dealer can tell you if any of them have been superseded.

The drive pin should be a slip fit. The plastic cone nut holds it in. Be sure to use a stainless steel cotter pin in that cone. If it comes off, so does the prop. But that only happens if the water is at least 50 feet deep.

nouse;

323404 comes up as 0323404 | WATER TUBE-X LONG.

0386165 appears to be the right P/N for the impeller. Have you installed one before? It will look larger than the housing as you have to insert it so that the vane tips will be trailing. for pictures of what an installed impeller looks like with the trailing tips, look here:

The latest number for the pump kit is 391741 and the Sierra equivalent is 18-3379.

From BRP Evinrude website:
0319155 HOUSING, $30.00 USD
0386165 IMPELLER,Pump. $42.96 USD
0317078 KEY,Impeller. $6.60 USD

I don't know where you're getting pn's from.

Are you sure the lower unit is same model/year as rest of motor? The motor may have gotten a donor LU along the way.

Use the BRP gaskets. I always have replaced the whole mess using the complete water pump kit, unless the wear plate and housing were almost perfect, with no grooving.

If you don't have a lot of service experience, you may find this helpful:

Look at the parts list on BRP Evinrude website. It gives complete parts breakdown, including gaskets.
