Good Morning! We have a Suntracker Bass Buggy 18 with a 40hp Evinrude outboard. I think it is a 91 model motor. Model # TE40ELEIA. The motor cranks but will not continue running. Anyone have any suggestions about where to start? Thank you!!!

I would start by giving the carbs a good cleaning or rebuild. Easy to do and the kits are around 20.00. make sure you run a small wire thru all the jets and orafices then sprayed well with carb cleaner then blown out with compressed air.

Thank you so much for the advice. We will do that. We have already cleaned the fuel tank and are replacing the filter. We did notice that the plugs are getting alot of oil on them after cranking...This boat has been sitting for over a year, but I think always had this problem. My dad said it would run ok for a few minutes, then quit. Also, the "oil tank" has been disconnected for some reason in the past, so we are mixing the gas and oil. Trial and error....thank you again..this site is so helpful for those of us who are learning!!! :)

Just mix at 50:1 and you should be good as long as the conversion from the vro oil tank was done properly. If you do a search on here for vro conversion there are a ton of threads that tell how to do it step by step. The problem might that it wasn't done properly, something not disconnected or plugged. You can also make sure that you have good spark to each plug with a $10 spark tester from Autozone. Make sure it jumps almost a 1/2" with a bright blue spark. yellow is not good enough. Take both plugs out when you do the spark test.

Can anyone tell me whether this is a two stroke or 4 stroke? Mod # TE40ELEIA

it's a 2-stroke. Thus the oil fuel mix.
