I just totally rewired a 402 40hp merc electric start. replaced most everything.stator,rectefier&switchbox.I am finally firing at spark plugs! my question to someone is,should voltage be present at the orang or salmon colored terminal on switchbox? I am getting about 8 volts dc with key in on position? I am scared to hook it up till I know for sure do not want to kill a 225 dollar switchbox!! can someone help?

Re: 402 merc wiring ?????

Wow!! You got me there! I know it should have stator potential when running, but as it goes to ground to shut-down the engine, my gut-answer is NO! It would indicate an 8Volt short-to-ground condition, thus bad news,if I am thinkin straight.
It's ironic, as I just replaced the stator on a 402 merc, and didn't bother to check! Hopefully, someone here with a 402 in thier driveway, could go out there and measure HIS for you.
The one I werked on is 75miles north of me now, and the owner is not "meter friendly",if you know what i mean.

I've got a T402 as well, give me some more details and I;ll hunt up my meter. I actually just dropped lower unit last night to change out impeller - am also going to drop by a marine store w/ L/U to see what gasket leaking/water in L/U. Figured I'd replace as much as poss. while apart. Any other info on 402's would be greatly appreciated(I did just get Seloc manual - OK for general stuff but should have got OEM 402 manual. )Heinz
