400 & 800 lower units, the same?

I know the obvious 4 cyl vs v6 & v8 differences between the two, but are the lower units the same, or are they geared differently? Thanks

Clarification, I have a 400 O/D on a 120hp inline 4. I could get an 800 lower. Is it doable, or is this a foolish move. What are the gains / losses I should expect? They are both hydrolic shift.

No, the gear ratios are different in the 400.<br /><br />13.26 in the 400, 14.26 in the 800... hence two different part #s.
