40 Million Americans don't have health insurance. Sure they have two or three color televisions, and they are struggling to make the car payment, house payment and keep up with all those credit card instalments.....so lets buy health insurance for them, the most efficient and low cost way possible!!!! Let the federal government do it!! Does Kerry think we are retarded? Show me one person who actually thinks the government should provide health coverage, and I'll show you a socialist who doesn't deserve to breath American air.

Re: 40 million Americans

My mother and sister are both nurses, and through that I get some exposure. There are lots of people that can't afford to take care of themselves, and it's heartwrenching to see the pain and suffering that can be prevented if these people were simply able to afford healthcare. So on one hand, the notion of social healthcare sounds nice, then maybe some of these poor souls can take care of their problems before they become problems.

Unfortunately, it's just a notion. The reality and execution of it would be a nightmare. The government screws up every single social program they ever get their hands into. Healthcare quality would plummet, and taxes would go through the roof. You think Social Security is a blunder and in dire straights, I'm sure healthcare would be twice as bad...

They can use the Ronald Regan medical plan. He didnt invent it, it became popluar during his time.

1) Get Sick/Hurt
2) Go to Hospital
3) Get better
4) Dont pay the bill, others insurance will pick up the slack.

Why do you think they charge 20 dollars for asprin? Why do you think medical debt is not on your credit report?

Ken

Hey why dont we not have health insurance and then we all would be reaposible for our OWN HEALTH COSTS. Man alot of people would be begging health insurance. Heart attacks at $50-100 thousand, and something just as simple as a colonoscopy is $3000. I will gladly pay my $350 a month for health premiums instead of driveing a newer car. These people dont understand what it will be like if we have government regulated health care.

Ok sorry I will get off of my Soap Box Now

Honestly, if everybody WAS responsible for their own health costs (i.e. they actually paid their bill) then we wouldn't be in this mess with healthcare costs skyrocketing out of control.

Hey all, don't forget about the guy that y'all want to elect as VP for his part in medical costs. Medical malpractice is one of his specialties. Whadya think that does for the cost of medicine.

My take on this MESS- I think it sucks big time. I work at a job that I really don't wont to. Why? Because I can afford the insurance plan they offer and its a pretty good one. If people (the da's in the goverment) would realize that people don't deserve anything they aren't willing to work for then we would see some change. I received my schooling/police academy through a stipend- I had to work 16 hours a month for 2 years to cover the cost, without pay. We have paid for all of my wifes schooling out of our pocket. Luckily this time around she was able to arrange a stipend this time, I sure miss her working but it will be worth it. We have worked for just darn near everything we have and to see others get it free burns me like nothing else. :(

Re: 40 million Americans

SW, I'm curious what scientific study you are citing to support your contention that all of these uninsured people have all these TV's and new cars and the like.

The reality is that we have not yet progressed as a society to simply allow sick and injured people to die in the streets because they have no insurance, so they are treated somewhere. And someone pays for this. I'd like to see it under some sort of control, as opposed to what we are doing now.

And as far as malpractice costs, I would like to see an independent analysis of the reason for increased malpractice insurance costs. I know it is handy and popular to blame lawyers for this (which on its face has to be incorrect, as the lawyers do not award payments--courts do). My information tells me that malpractice awards are in line with where they have always been, and the real reason for increased rates in the unregulated malpractice arena is that insurance companies lost a ton of money in poor investments with the stock market bubble burst, and they are just recouping those losses.

I think we need to make sure we truly understand what the problem is before we offer far reaching solutions.

Re: 40 million Americans

when i say kids are covered through state, I mean
NY state child health plus, which I PAY for to the
tune of $300/mo and that's just for them.
it's a viscious cycle... providers overcharge by
HUGE amounts, and states regularly under pay and
slow pay medicare/aid bills.
I don't want "free" gov't sponsored medical coverage,
I just want to be able to pay a fair amount like
most people. MY cost for private coverage would
be $700+/mo! and the wife and I may see a doc.
3-4 times a year and have no real health problems.

perhaps the gov't can pool up all these millions
of people and negotiate an affordable PAY insurance
plan much like big corporations do. the more employees
you have, the lower the rate ( buying in bulk)

My company's insurance has steadily gone down year after year.

We use to have great coverage, but little by little, they chip it away with less benefits.

Get the illegals out, and the deadbeat baby-machines off of welfare. That would be a good place to start.

H.

Re: 40 million Americans

one more example came to mind... last winter I
slipped on the ice and broke my ankle. not serious,
just a hairline fracture. I wore an aircast for
a few weeks. on one of my follow up visits to the
hospital, they gave us the bill and we noticed
they charged $800 to cast my leg! of course we got
them to take that off, but I wonder if it was on
purpose? if i had insurance, I prob. woulda never
seen the bill and ins. woulda just paid.

Re: 40 million Americans

Fun topic here. I'm one of those out there that did not have insurance. The fiance and her five kids did, but not me. Im young and invincible,, remember?

Nope... went out on the boat was was tubing. Fell off and broke a finger. Went to the ER, they couldn't do anything but send me to an orthpedic doctor, however they still managed to charge me $400 for 15 minutes of their time.

The orthopedic doctor performed the surgery, put in a couple of screws and have done numerous x-rays before and after. Their total bill was around $1100. Not bad at all.

Then come the bills from the hospital, the hospital x-ray tech and the anesthesist. X-rays were pretty cheap, the doc who knocked me out sent me a bill for $600 and the hospital sent me an additional bill for $4000.

I'm wondering what in the hell the hospital did besides see me for 15 minutes in the ER the day it happened and give the orthopedic doctor a place to do the surgery and for me to rest a couple of hours a few days later. Total cost for all of this is somewhere around $6K and it's all coming out of my pocket.

The problem is the hospitals, not the doctors, when it comes to ridiculous medical costs. The other bills I understand. X-rays, surgery, anesthetics... but what did the hospital do to deserve $4000+ of my hard earned cash? They gave me a band-aid and a place to lay down for a couple of hours. $2000 an hour for a hospital stay? I'm in the wrong business.

That said, I am not in favor of the goverment taking over health care and I certainly don't want a hand out. The more they take over, the more stuff gets screwed up. However, something seriously needs to be done about our system.
