I have a 40 HP Johnson with power trim. The unit leaks down and the repair shop determined the problem was a poppet valve ( part 0335134). The problem is they don't make this part anymore. Is there any other solutions other than finding a used pump with a good valve or buying anew pump?

Look at the top of the page in the "Top Secret File" sticky, there is a list of salvage yards there, I bet one of them can help you out.

Re: 40 HP Trim pump part

try boats dot net. they list the part as available.

If it is truly NLA and remaining inventory gone, then I'm sure that you could use
an alternative borrowed from industrial engineering.

check the diameter of needle valve opening and see if an oildyne style
poppet fits. (1/8" to 1/16" diameter). The oildyne (parker hannafin) type
is descended from prestolite and is common throughout all brands of
marine pumps. You would want to replace the spring such that new spring
fits inside collar or poppet.

if not, then take your reverse poppet and put it in the forward slot.
replace the reverse poppet with an acetal ball. Finding the right spring for
that may be a little more difficult. It would need to be about the same stiffness
as a motor brush spring and of just the right diameter to hold the ball on center
without catching on the internal sides.

please let me know if the poppet truly is NLA from boats. I was going to
start rebuilding these systems at a flat rate price. If the poppets are NLA
then I am going to have to determine an exact fix before publishing any prices.

Thanks, that sugestion using the list of salvage yards worked. Two places that called me back, at the same time, that had the part. The one I purchased the part from charged the list price. The second place had the part, but at 150% of list price, but I would have paid it if the other palce didn't have it in stock.

Not sure what NLA stands for but I think it is, the equivalent to "original equipment" or "factory equipment". It is same part that is listed in the official shop manual parts blowup and it is a Johnson part number. I liked your suggestion of using it in the forward slot and would have tried that if I could not find it.

If you want I can take pictures and/or meassurements of the part when received for you.

I am really thankfull for both of your posts, since without those I almost bit the bullett and ordered a new pump out of frustration (list $1100 but available at a discount)

I just got in my last order of trim parts, and sure enough this poppet # 0335134 is no longer available. BRP is out with no replacement. Which is a shame because it is a critical part of hydraulic rebuild. The original is made from acetal plastic and should be replaced.

and now they are no longer selling a critical repair part.

do any of you guys have a metal lathe and do precision work? if so, pm me. I'm going to have to design my own and will need to have a couple hundred cut from plain steel rod.
