40 hp mercury outboard. need help!

motor crank and engine wont start... any ideas about why it not start?
sometimes it starts and die after that it wouldnt start any more...anybody knows whats wrong?

It has run out of fuel.

No, seriously, need way more information.

When was the last time it had maintenance and what was done?
What year/serial number, is it carb or EFI?
Have you checked for spark?
Is the fuel filter clean (is fuel getting to the carbs/injectors)?
