I have a 2001 40 hp merc on a 13 boston whaler. after launching and warming up, I am intermitantly getting a warning alarm from the shift console on wide open throttle. Ill shut it off and raise the engine to make sure im not seaweed fould, let it sit for a few minutes and restart it . It will be fine for the rest of the day. Dosn't happen all the time, and when it does, there is a strong stream of water from the water pump. Any ideas , thanks.

Hi Islandguy,

We need a bit more information about your engine. A serial number would be the most useful, but is it 2 stroke or 4, and how many cylinders?

Cheers,

Chris..........

Chris , Thanks for writing back. It is a 2 stroke, oil injected 2 cylinder. I dont have the serial number handy because the boat is a undred miles away right now.Im been an auto mechanic with cadillac for 26 years but outboards are a whole different world.Any info would be apreciated.

Re: 40 hp merc warning alarm

Hi Islandguy,

Based on that I'd be looking at the thermostat/poppet valve if it's a continuous alarm. If it's beep-beep-beep the floats in the oil tanks are a known problem. Raising the engine may have been enough to 'unstick' the float and allow it to rise.

Chris, Thanks again for the reply, Its a continious beep, but then wouldnt the thermostat stick all the time? Also i didnt even know I had an oil alarm on the motor, Ithought that was jst on the bigger outboards.I guess its time I invested in a merc service manual. Thanks again , and you are correct ,the world Does look different at 100 feet.
