I am looking at purchasing a boat with a 1996 40hp Mercury outboard. Did a compression test and got 110, 115, 116, and 119 on each cylinder. Is this about right, or should I be concerned? Also, the water come out was extremly hot, steaming a little. We ran it with a small cheap pair of ear muffs-could it be not getting enough water to cool? If I put boat in water and run, should water coming out be warm or cool? Im sure not steaming! Also trim motor needs replaced-easy fix? approx cost? Anything else I should look for? Thanks,

Compressions sound ok...

As for the hot water.... With the engine running on the muffs, put the back of your hand on the exhaust covers. They should be cool to the touch, or very slightly warm. If they're hot, they is a problem. And you should not be running the engine at anything but idle on the muffs.

Trim pump.... It's a bit of a tricky job to replace the trim pump motor, and they cost about $320 (from here at iBoats. :D)

You can DOWNLOAD the service manual and have a look at the job yourself... (file password is <<ribforum>>)
