40 hp Johnson lower unit

I am trying to drop the lower unit on a 97 Johnson 40 hp. I can only get the unit to drop about 6 inches. Any tips?

Welcome to iboats Vaughn.<br />I'm bettin' the shift linkage is still hooked up.<br />Have you disconnected it yet?<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

I have never seen a gear case drop 6 inchs with the shift linkage hooked up. I would think that shift rod is snagging somwhere.
