Best to test the electric shift coils / shift switch now..----Also you must have a working generator and voltage regulator on this motor.----Do a compression test.----Post your numbers.

Update. Found a super corroded wire going to kill switch replaced it.my key works again.lol
Now pulled flywheel.of death again. Put wiper to highest point on cam.(also used screwdriver in piston to make sure it was TDC) Set points to .20 replaced fly wheel no joy.
Found single makes on flywheel 180° apart so pulled flywheel again. Set single mark on flywheel just in between 2 marks on magplate. Set to .20 on points. Replaced flywheel. No freaking joy again. It's gotta be something simple.

Wait a second....so if my belt broke and I've been trying to start the motor without the generator... it won't fire?

Stop.---The belt , battery and generator have nothing to do with making spark.---- -When the mark on the flywheel is in between the 2 vertical marks , that is the point where breaker points open.----That is NOT where points are set at 0.020".----Use an ohmmeter to determine this.-----Find ---leroysramblings ---And study this magneto.----Other tutorials online too.-----Take the time to learn how this wonderfully simple magneto works.-----Then you will have great joy for years to come.----The electric shift coils draw near 2 amps when in gear.----Therefor you must have a working generator to enjoy this motor !!

The topic for this thread is ----setting points and timing.-----So there are 2 concepts here.-----The breaker points OPEN to fire the plugs via the coils.-----The breaker points can be set using timing marks for strongest sparks.-----Or simply set the breaker points at widest gap of 0.020 " and it will run.---Verify actual timing with a light.-----Both should fire with mark on flywheel between marks on magplate.----- -Your choice of the method.

Yep, the points should break contact just as the timing marks on the flywheel pass between the marks on the mag plate. That's when the spark is generated as explained above. A properly attached multimeter will tell you precisely when the continuity of the points ceases.

Points are timed to open relative to the rotation / position of magnets rotating around the coils.----After all this unit is called a " magneto " and it is a very good unit produced / installed for nearly 40 years.------The battery is not used to make spark.-----If points open at the wrong time there will be weak or no spark !!!

don't know if you seen this.... it kind of shows how to do it.. no need for the fancy pointer device since the FW serves as the guide . ..but if you do ots of oldies the pointer is real handy :)

Are these the single marks on my flywheel?

Just put magplate on 1959 model 5..5 HP Evinrude today.-----New coils , wires, points and condensers.--Set points by eye to 0.020" ------Nice spark on both leads.-----Sorry,---it really is not that difficult.-----Will use the meter for final settings in spring.

I guess if someone would look at my flywheel and tell me if this are the single marks on the flywheel. Thise triangle 🔺️ I'm pointing at. I have great spark, great compression toys to start. Even reversed the spark plug wires to see if she'd fire like a shot gun... fired great. Lol. Guess I gotta call a pro this craps for the birds. Tried 59 different ways to det this dang thing I'm done....for today....it's Miller time!

With great spark now on both cylinders, it sounds like you have the ignition in proper order. It's now time to move on to the fuel system. Squirt a little premix into the carb throat or the spark plug holes and see if it kicks over. If it runs briefly for a few seconds, chances are the powerhead and ignition are in good shape. Now you need to determine the issue with fuel delivery (carb, primer bulb, fuel lines, connections, fuel pump, etc. ).

Agreed
I thought you were going to clean the carb and report back? Your finger is in the correct spot. That info was in post 32.
Now move on to post 36 and see where that gets you. If you haven’t cleaned the carb then you need to do it. If that motor sat for 5 years there is no doubt there is going to be varnish to deal with at the very least.

How about a compression test ???----How about the battery charging system ( broken belt ) as needed for electric shift ?----Evaluation electric shift components ??-----There might be a reason this motor sat for years.------ Ignition tune-up and carburetor cleaning might be a waste if this is a " dead Seahorse " but that is only my opinion.-----These things are so easy to check out.----And it may not be easy to find a shop willing to take on these older motors either !

Are those the timing marks ?-----Please read & heed post # 10 again.-----Sorry to be blunt on this topic.-----Time to step aside I think.
