40 hp Evinrude no idle

I have owned a 1972, 40 hp Evinrude [ model 40252E ] which has not been used often but always performed well.<br />It sat for 2 years without running and when started ran rough and one cylinder would cut out. Had a local guy put in new plugs and coils, runs better but will not idle down to put into gear, only stalls. Starts up fine and runs good if you can idle it down to get into gear.<br />I am thinking it is the carburetor, but I do not want to attempt that repair without a manual. Can anyone recommend a manual available for this model that shows carburetor repairs and a parts supplier that will ship parts. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Iboats, Macbmx!<br /><br />Do yourself a real favour and get the original factory manual. It is far better than the Selocs and Clymers, etc. You can get reprints of it from kencook.com, maxrules.com, theoutboardwizard.bizhostin.,com and others. But I also see a few used ones on ebay right now for decent prices. Use these ebay search terms:<br />(40, 40hp) (Evinrude, Johnson) manual 1972<br />We don't usually bother to distinguish, since about this time Evinrudes and Johnsons were identical except for paint and trim. <br /><br />As for the carb kit, try your local dealer, P/N 439075. This is the factory kit which includes a new float to replace the troublesome cork one. It's only a couple bucks more than the aftermarket kits (18-7042), which do not. There are online dealers that carry that too. A quick google search of that part number should turn up a few.<br /><br />I think you're on the right track.<br /><br />I hope that helps!

Thanks for the information. I talked to someone at kencook today to get a manual. Once I have the manual I will get the kit & float as you suggested. Will keep you informed, your help was much appreciated.
