I have a mid '90s 40hp 4 cyl mercury on a basstracker and it has lost spark to cylinders 1 and 2. I have swapped the coils around and the problem stayed with 1 and 2. How do I test and see if I need to replace the switch box or the stator. I have read about these motors having lots of problems with the black stators. I just got this boat and have never done any work on it so far except for replacing gaskets in the carbs so I dont know which stator it has. Thanks for all your help in advance.

You can do some testing on the stator with an ohm meter and a manual. But to do it properly you will need a DVA (direct voltage adaptor).

Losing spark on 1 and 2 sounds more like a trigger, than a switchbox or stator... But as bhile said, get a DVA. Or if you a handy with a soldering iron, save yourself $100+ and make it...

See THIS thread for details. (parts only cost about $6)

sounds like the switchbox I had a problem with 1 cyl not firing on a 2 stroke 40 HP I replaced the switchbox and it worked great after that see my second responss for extra parts on the 4 cyl 4 stroke 1997

With the type of problem you have a simple check for the stator is go to the switch box swap the red with red/white wires and the blue with the blue/white and retest for spark if it stays the same its the box or trigger, if it changes to the other cyls. it's the stator. The trigger can be checked by swapping wires from 1 with 3 and 2 with 4 also
