I have a 40 horse Evinrude that when I try to start it kicks back really bad I can get it to start but it runs really rough and coughs and spits. It tries to rip your arm when you pull it. I really appreciate any help in setting the timing. If you have any ideas I would appreciate any other ideas too.
The model # is E40ER8R
Serial # is G 02559753

Have you checked to see if your flywheel key is sheared?

I am pretty sure they are right. Top goes to top bottom to bottom. Really need help with the timing I think.

A sheared fly wheel key will mess your day up as will loose plates under the flywheel. Flywheel key is where the timing comes from.;)

I'd guess either flywheel key or primary wires on the coils reversed.
