I have a 40 horse Evinrude that when I try to start it kicks back really bad I can get it to start but it runs really rough and coughs and spits. It tries to rip your arm when you pull it. when i do get it running it seems to only be running on one cylinder. I can pull the top plug wire off and nothing changes. I replaced the coil thinking it might be the issue and no luck. as far I can tell the whole timing plate is one peice is that my next thing to try????
If you have any ideas I would appreciate any other ideas too.
The model # is E40ER8R
Serial # is G 02559753

I can't make out the second last digit in the model number. It is important. E stand s for 1990 so you have a 199? . Never tried to rope start a 40 HP before but I own a 1995 so may one day. You should do a spark gap test and even pull the flywheel to check the condition of your key way What is your compression and how to the plugs look? Are they wet? Is the top wetter than the bottom? Best of luck. Rick.

no spark on top cylinder, and swaped around and it follows so its not the coil and because its new.

when you say it follows, do you mean there is still no spark on the top cyl? if so, id go the easy route first, and clip a half inch off both ends of the plug wire to the top coil, and screw the coil and plug boot back on . if that dont work, switch the points and condensor and see if the prob moves to the bottom.

For now we will call it a 1998 just for the fun of it ( let us now that second last digit, it should not be an 8). Anyway it won't have points and condensers. CDI 2 ignition system no doubt. You gotta love points and condensers when it comes to trouble shooting CDI ignition problems. You can go to the CDI website for help or (like I just did) take it to a marine mechanic. My mechanic did the tests and determined it was my power pack which I ordered and changed myself. He only charged me for a half hour of his time which I thought was very fair. You will need a special DVA meter to self test it. Best of luck. Rick.

Whenever i hear of a motor trying to "kick back" i think of the plug wires being reversed. For s***s and giggles just double check that. Its prob not the prob, but its the silliest stuff usually.
