I would love to have a modern four stroke outboard for all the obvious reasons. Problem is, it just wouldn't look right on a finned 1959 runabout. So, my factory red/white/silver and chrome finned Lark 40 two-stroke will keep it's job.

Gonna miss the 'two strokes' ...but, based on everything I've seen, heard, and read - my next o.b. will have to be a Yamaha 4 stroke.....<br /><br />as fyi - the December edition of "Trailer Boats" magazine (pg.20) has a J.D. Power and Associates Customer Satisfaction Study which lists responses from 12,000 consumers who purchased a new boat in 2001. <br /><br />Summary:<br />Among 2 strokes:<br />1. Yamaha<br />2. Evinrude<br />3. Mercury<br />4. Johnson<br /><br />Among 4 strokes:<br />1. Yamaha<br />2. Honda<br />3. Evinrude<br />4. Mercury <br /><br />As gee whiz - when talking about engine problems, Jim Barron (Traile Boats editor)writes:<br />"New technology engines proved to be far more reliable than their older-technology brethren. EFI four-strokes accounted for only half as many problems as two-stroke carburated outboards. The report also indicated that in the case of both two-stroke and four-stroke outboards, the larger the engine, the fewer the problems..........

Just bought a 115 Merc 4-stroke EFI. Fuel mileage is unbelievable. Be advised that the top end of the Merc 4-stroke is made by Yamaha so the only difference between Yamaha and Merc 4-stroke is the lower unit.

So what is the point of this "survey?" other than to cause pointless retoric between the owners of 2 different types of engines? Hey JB , how about moving this to the "inflamatory topics " post?

The only inflammatory posts on this topic were posted by you and sloopy, the rest of us seem to think this topic is interesting. <br />It's just a survey (don't over react to it.)This kind of survey just gives you a quick snapshot on what type of OB people would buy next spring. With this information you can draw your own conclusions. I've already drawn mine in a previous post which included stats and a breakdown of percentages etc.<br />If you disagree with this post start a new topic, don't go crying to JB!

Whos crying to anyone Jock? This "survey" doesn't give the potential buyer any useful information. There are hundreds of brands out there for hundreds of applications, each person has to make the decision for themselves. I believe this topic should be moved( or better yet, disregarded) and if you don't like reading my opinion...tough fisheads, get over it!

Dmessy,<br /><br />You're right I don't like reading your opinion. But you're entitled to speak your mind like anyone else here at the forum.<br /><br />Why don't you start a new topic called I don't like surveys and post it in 'Nothing to do with boats'.
