2005 4 stroke 9.9hp merc. It fires up then dies right away.

Already changed all fuel line sections (tank to outboard connector, connector to filter, filter to fuel pump) except the last section from fuel pump to carb.

new fuel filter, new squeeze bulb, new carb (ebay aftermarket), new plugs. squeeze bulb stays firm. If i pump it, fuel does come out of the carb's drain plug.

tried to open up the fuel pump but the 4 screws were pretty corroded so gave up. there was one time after it fired up and I squeezed the bulb and it kept running but unable to repeat with success again.

where do I go from here ?

With a carburetor filled with the manual fuel pump it should run for at least 10 seconds.----Sounds like you need to adjust / inspect this new carburetor.

Take the carb off and clean it…inspect for oil…that’s came up and through from the sump. Can happen in storage or in the boot of the car unfortunately.
An old mercury mechanic once told me years ago…that 99% of running issues on an outboard…are carb related.

dumb me. I'd moved the boat to an area where the ground is sloped on one side (port side is lower than starboard). traced back every step and changes I made and that was the only difference between now and the last time it ran fine, so I moved the boat to an even ground, it runs fine now. lesson learned.

these carbureted outboards are so finicky.

update: it idles ok, but if I rev it, still dies, if I pump the bulb, it'll keep going. fuel pump?

Yes, that's typically the test confirmation.

Clean the carb out. You’ve probably taken oil into it from the sump
