4 hp 1995 long shaft having assembly problems

i have fitted a new W/P impeller but having a dreadfull time trying to get the shaft back in the socket thing at the top end,I am determined not to give in does anyone have any ideas please? many thanks in anticipation Leslie

Have someone turn the prop by hand very slowly while you try to lower the motor assembly onto the shaft. The splines have to line up.

shift rod( is shaped as, is not straght)
this shift rod must fit into small hole in lower unit
use torch to locate this hole
