Bought a 2003 Glastron SX-195 equiped with a 4.3L Mercruiser Alpha. Last owner said only work it had done was a new carb. It runs fine out of the water, put it in for the first time today and let it warm up but it just kept stalling, tried at it for 20 minutes and would not stop stalling. Is this another carb issue? thank you

How long does it run before it stalls. Then after it stalls, how long does it take before you can restart it?

It starts back up almost immediately. As soon as you give it throttle, before it gets going it stalls

When you start it, do you let it warm up before trying to go? Are you using the throttle only button on the control?

As soon as you give it throttle, before it gets going it stalls

So, how long is that? 1 second, 5 minutes?????

This is my first boat so bear with me. In neutral or in forward drive, only in the water, when throttled up as soon as it goes up it stalls out. If you let it sit in idle or jerk the throttle back down before it stalls, it will stay on maybe 10-20 seconds

That's what I wanted to know. It sounds like the oil pressure switch that controls your fuel pump is either defective, or the wires too it are corroded or came off.
The pump runs while you are cranking and fills the carb, then when you let off the key switch from crank position, the fuel pump stops running and the engine runs out of gas in 10 to 20 seconds.

Re: 4.3L Mercruiser I/O issue only in the water

Thank you for your help. I brought it home, cleaned the boat and flushed it since the mechanic is booked through the weekend, and when I was flushing it, it ran on idle for 20 minutes and I could freely in nuetral, rev up and down with no stalling. Still think that is the issue?

Thank you

When it stalls, are you trying to put it in gear?

Put the entire outdrive in a huge tupperware container, ran it, ran fine, put it in gear, seemed to do ok, couldnt do it long. Took it back out to the water. Idled fine, would cruise with minimal amount of gas given, then as soon as I gave it any gas, it would stall out unless I put it back to idle or close to it in gear

Could easily be carb problems, adjustments or accelerator pump issues, plugged ports, hard to say. Could also be timing.

What is your mechanical experience and abilities?

I have pretty much no mechanical abilities, my dad is pretty experienced. I have an appointment with a boat mechanic at the marina but he is backed up. So today I suppose I will change the fuel filter and run some of the ethanol cleaner through it in the meantime
