4.3 with Fuel Pump problem? I think.

1995 4.3L carburated with electric fuel pump.

I've had the boat about a year. Last year I noticed it wouldn't start and was getting no fuel if the boat sat for more than a couple of weeks. I blew hard into the vent a couple of times and it starts and runs fine. No problems unless it sits for a couple of weeks.

Today I take the boat out. Started fine because I had it running at home yesterday. We stop for about half an hour to swim, try to start and nothing. After playing with it for a bit, blew into the fuel tank vent and starts right up. Same think happened a couple more times today as well.

I'm thinking there's something wrong with the fuel pump, but don't want to spend the cash and find out there is another problem. Seems like priming the pump by pressurizing the fuel tank works, but I imagine there will come a day it won't.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Search "fuel test" and read Don's reply on #17

I found the "fuel test" post and I believe I understand it.

This is an electric fuel pump, so I'm not sure I understand how having the engine running is going to affect its operation. Is there a test I can do without having the engine running under a load as described? I live an hour from the lake and don't really want to be troubleshooting out there.

Thanks for your response.

Well, here is my fuel system test thread, not sure what this #17 means.........

Trust me, all the tests in the above has to be done with the engine running. There is a large volume of fuel going thru the pump when getting on plane and running on plane under load. Nothing like at idle.
Do the tests, you may surprised that what you don't know, can still cause problems.
