4.3 v6 mercrusier

New to boating and need some help guys. I just bought a 1992 dynasty elanti with the mercruiser 4.3 with the alpha 1 drive. Had it out on the water today and it was running great. All of the sudden a loud bang. We were out in the middle of the lake. I slowed down and it seems that the motor is running fine and the boat is performing fine just the motor is really loud now. What do you guys think is causing the noise? Thanks I’m advance

Distributor cap

I just bought a 92 dynasty elanti with the mercruiser 4.3 v6. Motor runs great but I was invenstigating a noise and noticed there is a spark plug in the plug wire laying around the engine. I trace it back and it is plugged into the distributor cap. Why is it there and how is the engine running so well?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... No idea why ya found what ya did,....

But i'm guessin' if ya put the spark plug back into the hole it belongs in,..... it'll run a 'ell of alot Better,....

Ayuh,..... Probably because of the spark plug ya found hangin' in the motor box,.....

The engine will run fine and just be louder with that spark plug out? And how the heck did it come out?? I don’t see where it came out of.

Got the new plug put in. Still seems to be louder but it’s not in the water either. Will have to test it out hopefully tomorrow

Sounds like that spark plug was loose and it popped out. I would check all of them for tightness. Better yet, get new ones and change them all.
It has been stated by many members here that a used boat new to you should be gone over completely since you don't know the maintenance history. Things such as tune-up, fluid changes, impeller to name a few.
