Engine is 2004 model with 125 hours. With proper maintenance how long should this engine last before I will likely have to pour money into it?

With proper maintenance and usage the motor will last between 5000 and 10,000 hours.

However a 20 year old motor with less than 1000 hours sat a lot. Sitting is NOT good.

Reality is boat motors hardly ever wear out. They are usually murdered by lack of maintenance

To me it seems the main causes are:
Not winterizing promptly
Running over propped—engine doesn’t turn up max RPM
Leaving bad exhaust on it and rusting exhaust valves & seats or even a hydrolock
Ignoring warning signs like mild overheating or the first signs of water in the oil
Not doing required maintenance
