I have an older 35 johnson with no model/serial number plate. It has electric start and is set up for remote operation. The measurement from the top of the transom to the top of the cavitation plate is 17". I was told that it was a mid 80's, but one morse control cable is a 48296-000 which seems to indicate that it is a pre 79 engine. The number on the freeze plug is 392124 RPH and the numbers on the side plates are: 326314-2 and 326713-2. Any idea on the model year? Also, where can I buy a second control cable, or new control box?

Thanks

Re: 35HP Johnson year?

None of those numbers mean a lot to me. The 35hp came out in '76 as an entirely new design. Before that the last 35hp they made was in '59. An easily described difference is the '70s version had thru-hub exhaust with a splined propshaft while the '50s one had a pin-drive prop with a black plastic cone on the end.
There's a change to the ignition system in the '70s that might help us narrow it down. The later outboards had CDI igniton while the earlier ones had a magento. On the CDI igntion the wires that run up under the flywheel will go through a connector into a black box called a powerpack, and from there to the ignition coils that feed the spark plugs. On the magneto ignition engine, the wires will go through a connector directly into the ignition coils. Which do you have?

Re: 35HP Johnson year?

Thanks for your info. My motor has a power pack, making it a later model.

Where does the model/serial number plate normally attach? I thought that they were on the motor bracket between the two clamps. I cannot find any indication that one ever existed on this motor.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks
