A faulty timer base won't tell the power pack when to fire the plugs.

Could a weak timer base output cause a low power pack output?
Nope....

Ok so then I take it since I have some spark, my readings on the timer base output must be wrong (ie they cant be zero, because the motor runs), and furthermore my power pack is extremely suspect since if it receives a signal to fire from the timer base and has enough juice from the stator (which is does), it should have the proper 175v output??

Again, although the output was low per the manual, the spark definitely does jump a 1/2" gap nice and blue.

Not really sure if I should try a different flywheel before buying either a timer base or a powerpack...any thoughts?

Flywheel ~150 (though they will be used of course)
Powerpack ~190
Timerbase ~280-300

The cranking voltage output on the timer base should be minimum .2 volts as measured on the A,B,C terminals on both legs (port and starboard) of the timer base. What was your reading on each of the 6 terminals? Less than .2 volts, it's suspect. It's hard to tell from your paragraph just above.

Yes, oddly I got no reading on any of the .2v tests..I think that may be due to the fact that my DIY DVA meter has a .3v drop across it (as verified by me), so Im thinking my tools just arent up for such a low voltage. Either way I assume it must be throwing some signal as the motor runs.

I had a dream about getting water in my cylinders again so I pulled the heads, just had to be sure...

Found this on the top port cylinder lower exhaust port (#2 I think). Gouges look deep, not sure whats on the other side of those, could it be allowing water?:

FYI the cylinder is not steamed, actually quite sooty but for some reason came out looking clean in those pics. Also, did a decarb less than 5 running hours ago which is why everything may be so clean.

Those streaks a common. Could have been from dirt when the engine was first assembled. They should not affect running. What will happen over a long period of time, is that the groove becomes a passageway for exhaust gas to pass down through it. Over a very long period of time, that carbon will pass down that groove and accumulate around the top piston ring at that spot. You should be ok if you continue to do a decab every year to two.

I was actually referring to those little Pitts/gouges at the bottom of the lower exhaust port...they look like they go pretty deep and not sure what's on the other side. That isn't dirt, it's actually little nicks/holes at the bottom of the port.

When I get home I'll circle what I'm talking about

Thats imperfections in aluminum casting when block was made, wont cause any problems.....

Thx all guess we can put this one to bed till the heads get put back on. Gonna get her going and enjoy her for another season since the block checks...

All this has pushed me to open a 'new outboard' account...time to start diverting my pennies. Besides will be well worth it in the long run...these 2thirsty5 motors certainly live up to their namesake...and premium only ouch.

I appreciate the input from everyone!
