Hello all,
I have a 1986 Formula 22' cuddy cabin with a 350 5.7 Mercruiser (Carburated) with a Bravo I outdrive. The engine is vibrating in and out of the water.
A bit of history:
We use the boat mainly for wakeboarding (A lot of starting and stopping) The problem seems to have started last time out on the lake about 3 weeks ago. The engine started to vibrate and then progressively seemed to get worse, so we trailered it and headed home. Not sure if it helps or not, but I was messing with the outdrive trim that day to see if I could get a bigger wake going. The next day, I started it on the trailer. It seems like the vibrating gets worse as the engine warms up. So I went on to do the following:
Replaced spark plugs and wires (Mercruiser wires and identical plugs)
Checked spark with an inline ignition spark tester (Steady spark)
I checked timing (Advancing or retarding the timing doesn't fix it, the engine shakes just the same.)
Checked compression (Good across the board)
Popped the valve covers off and checked the push rods and valve lash adjustment (Rods are straight and not slack)
Any opinions on what else could be the cause??? I was thinking that maybe a Universal Joint went bad in the outdrive. Since the output shaft from the engine into the outdrive is constantly spinning, does the output shaft disconnect from the outdrive before or after these U-joints???
Any help is much appreciated. I just want to see the boat back on the water before the end of the season. Thanks in advance !!!
