35 Jhnson Water Impellor Replacement

I have a 1980 Johnson 35 hp Model Number J35ELCSM. Im trying to do a water impeller replacement. do i need to lube top of drive shaft and seasl the top of plactic tube or is o ring thats on it good enough? Also do i need to put gasket sealer on the water pump housing or the plate before i bolt it back together? any help would be great. step by step even better

Does your driveshaft have a groove for the o-ring? The o-ring is to keep the grease sealed in at the upper end. Use marine grease on the shaft splines. When you install the plate and pump housing you do not need to seal them. Put a light coat of grease on the large o-ring and gromlet and impeller and inside of impeller housing when you install them. Put the new impeller back in the housing the same direction you take the old one out and use the new key pin to hold it against the shaft while installing. Make sure you get the the water tube into the gromlet when you install the housing back to the upper unit. It is impossible to see down in the housing during install. Guide the housing back on as straight as possible to get the tube in the gromlet. You may need to turn the prop with it in gear to get the driveshaft aligned into upper section. Have someone help you and it is easier. When you put the water muffs on do not crank the water pressure too high. Pressure should be about 15# and a hose can put out 3 times that if turned on full blast. There are some articles through google that you can type in and are also helpful.

When you grease the upper drive shaft splines only grease the sides of the splines not the top of the shaft.
