My 98/40 typically takes about 4-6 seconds to start when cold, and less than a second to start when warmed up. If mine acts any different than that, something is wrong.

Re: 35 hp Force hard to start.

Welcome to iboats.

THe last year they made the 35 hp model was 1991.

Review your starting procedure.

Open fuel tank vent

Check the kill switch, place in "run" position

Squeeze fuel primer bulb till firm.

Advance the throttle 3/4 way, or more without putting it in gear. -- This is done by either pushing a button in the center of the controls, or pulling the shift handle toward the driver, or raising the fast idle lever, all depending on what control unit you have.

Turn the key to the on/run position.

Activate the choke by pushing in on the key. The choke is only activated while the key is being pushed and held in.

Turn the key to start while continuing to hold the key in.

Release the key and choke when it starts.

3-5 seconds of "choke", is usually enough.

Be ready to pull the throttle back toward the idle/neutral position, when the engine starts and the revs increase.

Continue to pull the throttle back as the engine warms up.

You should not have to use the choke much, if at all, once the engine has warmed up.

Engine should start within 10 seconds of turning the key.

Thanks guys, I plan on buying the ear muffs and trying the suggestions this weekend. I have never held the key pushed in while starting it I am hopeful that will take care of the problem.

Somewhere it is quiet, turn the key to the on position, then push in on it. You should hear the choke "click" at the carbs. This is the sound of the plundger closing the choke butterfly/s
If not, check choke fuse first (I had one blow once).

Mine takes a few seconds to start when warm as well, I ask one marine guy he didn't seem to surprised tho. I also found a head bolt loose at the end of the season.[ first year owning the motor bought it used] will change plugs and do test on compression. But it starts cold fine.
