So I got back into playing with outboards a little bit.
I have a 1986 OMC with CD2 power pack. The last time this thing was run, was for 10 minutes in 2003 in Cape Cod bay and pulled off the boat because of a lower unit problem. (it kept on dropping out of gear). Next it spent 17 years in a barn. I got a hold of it, replaced the impeller, did a pressure test (115 in each hole)cleaned out the carburetor, replaced the fuel pump and hoses, replaced the plugs, spark plug wires and checked for spark. Next I tried to start it. The engine turns over nicely, but does not start. I am inclined to replace the cd2 power pack and the coils, but I wonder if this is neccessary. It says that it must have the ignition at 34 degrees advance, but I cannot find an adjustment screw, and I do not even know what to adjust.
Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Model # is ?-----It appears there were 2 " different " 35 HP models -----One being the 50 HP as jet power rated 35 HP ?------On the smaller 32 cubic inch the screw was always on the starter motor bracket.

But, but ----It can be adjusted and therefor there are those folks that have ----" lets see what happens when I turn this screw " approach to the repair work..----Yes I know that timing on these motors is set at the factory and does not need to be changed .

Ok, thank you. I found the empty hole where the screw is supposed to go. I’ll stick another one in there. Do I retard the ignition by screwing the screw deeper in?

This is starting to be a bit more interesting than I originally thought. Although the model # points at an 86, The starter bracket with the timing adjustment screw and some more part numbers on the ignition parts, make me suspect that the only 1986 part is the transom bracket. The rest is clearly pre 1984. Oh well, I have till NY duck season starts to fix it, so I should be alright

Everything that is under the hood is 1978. I talked t the guy who gave me the engine and he looked through some old papers he had about the engine and he told me the original model # which is 35853R. So 1978 it is. With that out of the way , I replaced the power pack and the coils, cleaned the carburetor, replaced the fuel pump and water pump and tried to start it. Sometimes it would start but then after it ran a bit it would violently stop. I checked the woodruff key and sure enough, it was broken. After replacing it , the engine runs fine. It is a cdi ignition.
Now the last thing is the timing screw setting. (the one on the starter bracket ?) does screwing it in deeper cause the ignition to happen later? Also I want to use a timing light ,but I cannot find the marker spot on the body where I can aim the light to see where I'm at. It may have been on a rope start bracket that is no longer on the engine. There are two sets of timing numbers on the flywheel, one for electric cdi and one just cdi, but I do not know where to aim the timing light. Any advice is highly appreciated . Thank you.
