Hey Westover,
You shouldn't have any gas leaking from the carb. Sounds like the float isn't working. Need to clean & rebuild the carb.
Backlash

I had the same problem a month ago. I took the boat to a mechanic, he said the needle seat was stuck or the float. It cost about $70.00 to get it replaced. Works like a charm. He said they get stuck sometimes when your on the road and your motor is up. My boat motor is small also a 40 mec, but it's great on gas. Hope this info helps. :)

Sometimes, you can tap the side of the bowl while someone else squeezes the primer, it will un-stick the needle valve. What it is, is the float needle valve, stickng open..This is usually caused by stale fuel,so clean your tanks, filter, and fuel line before attempting to re-start the enigine. If you do,you run the risk of sucking even more of this foul stuff into your sensitive carb. One final tip, avoid going into this carb deeper than removing it and then removing the bowl, and cleaning it with a spray,as this carb has a spring behind the needle, and the float settings can be easily knocked outta whack, and they are a PAIN IN THE NORTH END OF A SOUTHBOUND CAT to set just right.
But if you have to,you have to.
