35 evinrude "jumps" at WOT

I have a 35 evinrude that runs great except when running at WOT. The motor acts like I hit a log when running. If I slow down to 3/4 throttle it runs perfectly fine. I am looking for ideas before I start tearing down into the gearcase. Could this be the clutch dog going out?

First things first. Did this all of the sudden happen, or has it been something thats has progressed? post back.

The motor had been laid up for 10+ years. All I had to do was change a few wires that dry rotted and then I took it for a test run. At some point before it was laid up (don't know when) the clutch dog was replaced. So I am not sure if the problem was happening before it was laid up or not.

Running too rich? Does it have an adjustment screw?

So are you saying that when you go to WOT, the engine acts like it's falling on it's face? post back.

I'm thinkin it's jumping out of gear due to clutch dawg. You'll need to check your shift linkage adjustment too and make sure there is no slop in your shift linkage when you take it apart.

The Engine has no hesitation whatsoever. I thought I hit something in the water the first time it happened. But after the 5th or 6th time I knew it had to be something else.

You might check the lower unit oil and see if there is any metal particles in it.

Sounds like a lower unit issue to me. Giving out under maximum conditions. In time it will do the same under medium conditions and then light conditions. Needs "nipping in the bud"
Just my 2 cents though.

Sounds like it is probably the clutch dog, but check under your cowl, you could have a fuel line or something keeping it from throwing all the way into forward gear causing it to jump out and back in gear. Tore into my 35 a while back to find out it was the fuel line not letting it engage fully. Good luck.

The Lower unit oil looks good. All the linkages look good. I think I will take it apart and see if it is the dog that is going out. Thanks for the help.

My 83 Evinrude 35 just started doing the same thing yesterday.
I was running with a heavy load & thought I'd hit something. I had a few mile run back in sloppy conditions, & while sporadic it happened more often the harder I pushed.
Checked the oil today & no major shavings etc. (Whew).
Any more input on it? I'm really leaning towards the clutch dawg!
