my father-in-law has given his 2002 wellcraft 3300 martinique to my wife and I. we have it at the marina in a covered wet slip but it will need a lot of TLC. my question is what are the advantages of a cruiser vs a houseboat? the only other boat I have owned was a 21' deck boat. we have a 7 month old and a 2 year old so I am wondering if trading it in on a house boat, day boat, or an updated cruiser might be the better idea? also looking at similar boats for sale it looks like the asking prices for this style boat are between the mid 50's to mid 60's. I assume this boat is probably worth 40k with all the work it needs. what would be the max investment i should consider before it becomes a waste? I realize it is a boat and by nature they are all a bad investments but wanted to hear other peoples opinions on my situation and what they would recommend. thanks in advance.

Well first of all, what do you mean by a ton of work? if it's all cosmetic and cleaning then I would do it. Selling a nasty boat is hard and people will want to steal it from you.
If putting 5k into the boat will get 10k or more out of it then it's a no brainer. I would think that this boat would be more than sufficient for your family.

Most houseboats are terrible in the wind and not a lot of fun to drive, that being said, if you just want a floating cottage then a houseboat is great.
No matter what you get out of the boat your still coming out ahead.

If you ask "what would be the advantages of a houseboat" over this one the list would be short if not blank.

I can't imagine how much work an 11 year old boat could need.

Need MUCH more detail about "all the work it needs" . To some people a lot of work is replacing light bulbs and waxing a 35ft. hull. To others new engines, new stringers, new outdrives is a lot of work.

mainly cosmetic. the boat was in great condition before; but was left out in the sun for 1.5 years on jacks! the steering wheel needs replaced, the entire boat needs waxed.(heavy oxidation) and the cushions are 50/50 on being replaced? as far as the guts everything is coming on with the shore power but there appears to be some issues with the electrical. (vacuflush head works, fridge comes on, water pressure pump works, (but doesn't kick off, I think there is a leak somewhere). also the ac comes on and runs but water isn't circulating and pumping out the side. (seacock is open) needs 3 new battery's, windlass isn't working and it needs a new canvas enclosure. engines were serviced 2 years ago and should be fine. one is running (rough) and the other is close to firing. I think they just need a tune up??? the generator turns over but won't run? this is just my list from being on it for a few hours.

the one thing I can say is the interior fabrics counter tops bedding cabinets etc. are in very good shape, just need a good clean.

one other item to note is I received a quote for 928.00 for a full detail 3 coat wax including the interior and all compartments. I think this is a fair price but wanted to get some seasoned boaters input. ( I always waxed my own but this seems like more work than I have time for.)

I get a list from the mechanic today or tomorrow after his inspection. I will post his findings to see what I am really looking at.

thanks for all of the responses!

$928.00 on a 33' boat is a bargain. That boat books for $50K. Nice gift.

You need to go through the boat as you have already started to do, and make a list of all the "must haves" as in mechanical and safety, then all the "wants" cosmetic. A boat that has set out for 18 months in the weather is ripe for all kinds of problems. You will be saving that boat from shear rot and abuse of weather. You may well end up spending a few thousand to get her back to safe running order, but without the pictures and details of everything, I think we all are just guessing. Have you gone through the engines yet? all fluids changed, water impellers, then the out drives? lower unit changed out?
You are at an advantage as you know the old owner, imagine that boat w/o that?

We really need lots of pictures if we are to offer how to spend your cash!!

Welcome to boating, hope it just needs a few easy items to get you out on the water.

I hope you have at least stopped keeping the boat out in the weather, do you have canvas or sheltered dock space?

Nope total loss not worth the work... Because I feel sorry for ya, I'll trade ya my 28'er for it and I won't even make ya throw in any boot... LOL

nice boat!... WELL worth a little work and way better than a house boat if you plan to actually take it anywhere.

I should get a complete list from the mechanic tomorrow. once I do I will post it. ( I hope to go up and take some pictures on Thursday or Friday.) thanks for everyone's input. (and yes we are grateful for our gift! even if it cost us some money to get it working. thanks for the advice about safety. I plan to make that my top priority when the list comes out. ( I won't bring the kids on it unless its safe!)

Well I got a 1/2 update. Ac is working great vacuflush head is good too. As far as the engines both need fuel pumps. Volvo 5.7 gxi engines. 800 each seems steep ! But he explained that this is an upper and lower??? ( Any input?Googling some research now.

Sent him an updated list of all items I wanted checked late today. Hope to have more tomorrow.

Hopefully ill get some photos tomorrow as well

Pump price is correct. Not much you can do about that. They are known to fail after some time running ethanol. Painted insides passages in the pumps flake off, and clog the pumps, contributing to eventual failure.

Anyone know how to post a pic on the iPhone? Also this may be a dumb question but it looks like someone has swapped out the throttles? Can anyone explain why photos of similar boats shows duel throttles on both sides of the steering wheels? My boat only has throttles on the left??

Re: 33' wellcraft martinique tons of questions!

So a few more questions

Insulation replacement in the engine room( doing some research today. Any good advice on products or install tips?) from what's falling off the hatch it doesn't seem to be too big of a task

Ice maker repair. The breaker works and it comes on and gets cold but doesn't produce ice? It's the only manual I don't have, so I am hoping it's repairable? ( I should have wrote down the make and model last time I was at my boat!) anyone know what came standard?? I googled it but nothing came up.

Stereo. Cabin speakers work great but I will need to replace the 4 6.5 an 10 " sub.

Vacuflush head and holding tank clean. Right now the take is reading orange/ medium? It works when I flush it but I am getting a smell , in the cockpit, (not in the cabin) I opened the engine room and there are no leaks? Should I use the cleaning stuff now while it's 1/2 full or pump it out and then clean?

Thanks again for everyone's input!
I know I can

Re: 33' wellcraft martinique tons of questions!

Find the manual for the icemaker online. There might be a 'make ice/don't make ice' lever or switch somewhere on or in the unit. Just something that rang a bell

The head- the smell is coming from the vent when you flush. Embarrassing at the raftups! Mine was smelly until I started taking better care of it. What I did last spring...
- Pumped out the tank, flushed fresh water through the head, filled the tank via the pumpout fitting with fresh water, then pumped it out again.
- Flushed a capful of WISK through the head using fresh water, then did that again. Goal was to fill the hose from head to tank with detergent mix. Then I dumped half the bottle of WISK into the holding tank via the pumpout fitting, and filled it with fresh water. I let the whole thing sit for 24 hours.
- The next day I flushed a LOT of fresh water through the head to clean out the detergent mix. Pumped out the tank, refilled with fresh water and pumped out again. I repeated that 2 more times until I knew all the detergent was out of the system.

I'm careful now to pump out at the end of the weekend, and I use Raritan K.O. and C.P (Clean Potty) religiously. I also flush the head with fresh water instead of raw as much as possible. I use the flexible shower head to fill the toilet from my fresh water supply instead of pumping in raw water.

No more smell. If all that fails, you'll need to replace all the hoses- they CAN become permeated with the smell from the head, and no amount of cleaning will get rid of it...

You should have an inline vent filter on your Welly. I know the 2800 does. Replacing that should eliminate the head odors.

Re: 33' wellcraft martinique tons of questions!

welp, the hits just keep on coming! so they have repaired the fuel pumps and the boat is mechanically good to go, but I get a call from the lady who was going to do the 3 step wax and detail and she said the boat is to oxidized to do the 3 step and that it will need wet sanded? any idea on what the rough cost for this will run me? she said that it will be pricey? googling it now but was hoping for some quick feedback.

thanks,
