So let me get this straight - if someone is not like you then they are dumb. HMMM that is quite an ego. If it is your preference to buy used then just say that, don't bash everyone else for not being like you. As a matter of fact I know guys "like you" that bought a used boat that was trashed and poured more money in it than they could of bought a new one for. Then when it broke down every other trip sold it and lost their *** and then went and bought new. Now that might a little closer to dumb. According to my income and education I am far from dumb and guess what - this is my 2nd new boat and I am sure there will be a 3rd and a 4th. To each their own brother.

I think it's silly to finance(use OPM) to finance toys. I use other people
s money to buy investment properties. That $43K would buy me a rowhome in Baltimore city, and make $1500 a month in rent, paying the mortgage back, paying the insurance, paying the taxes, etc AND paying ME money every single month.

Just my take on things and why I'll be retired before I'm too old to enjoy myself.
Meanwhile, my 32 year old, $3800(I stole it!)Wellcraft Nova provides me with as much, if not more enjoyment than that $43K boat of the same size.

All that being said, I could care less what everyone else does, I am getting mine!

....bought a NEW boat in 2002 for $43,000 they paid cash.

Did ya'll miss this tidbit? All this talk about financing is interesting, but doesnt compute in the debate. The gentleman who the OP is whining about paid cash, so get over yourselves.

I suggest the green monster is running high in this thread, bashing a guy who doesnt have the same passion as the rest doesnt make him a monster.

I missed that and I STILL think it's silly.

No green monster here hahahahaha, Seems the guys buying the new boats are the most defensive, with their veiled insults towards guys who prefer used. I see the oh so common rallying cry that some can;t afford it so they must be suffering from class envy, hahahahahahahahaha oooook. :D;)

Paying cash for something, when you have a debt on ANYTHING, is using OPM. I paid "cash" on our new to us 04 glastron, less than 10k, but since we do have mortgages, I can't really consider it not financed. More that it is a toy we decided we'd like to have and debated buying it or paying down the mortgage. I'll not deride a person for buying a boat, or other toy if they have their ducks in a row, but I simply can't understand financing a boat when you carry credit card balances each month, have a car payment or other consumer line of credit outstanding.

To each his own though.

yeah, for some, it may be silly to do that. But thankfully we live in a free country that affords people the ability to make their own decisions whether stupid or otherwise.

Re: $3000 cost, per trip out to the lake....STUPID!

I would like to mention the few of us that bought new for less than used(yea, I like to brag about that). I searched the net for months looking at used boats I could afford. I just did a search for boats similar to mine and the closest I found was a Bayliner for 25% more than I paid for mine two years ago. I found some for more than twice what I paid. So going by the OP statement of $3000 per outing, I guess my boat is not costing me anything to go out( I wish). I bought new because it was my first and I was pretty sure I could resell it without a loss, if I didn't like boating. And with zero mechanical knowledge (although I just replaced an impeller without incidence), it's nice to have a warranty until I know what I can fix and where to take it without having to bend over for the repairs. My wife just figured out that our daily cost are around $500 for the past two years, without any resale value added in.

I wonder how much of people's thought process comes from class envy and how much is just how they truly feel. I think it comes down to logic. A 43k boat wouldn't make me blink an eye but cash for a 430k boat would. In my logic everyone should have the ability to have 43k sitting around but 430k idle cash is a different story. I say that but even my colleagues who should have the 430k sitting around with ease, spend, spend, spend then complain they don't have even 43k.

ok so I bashed my brother in law a bit...I admit it! he's a jack ^% and BELIEVE ME...if you met him you would agree.....I am sooo serious about that....

well if you want a new boat great...Im still saying..... buying a new boat....using it 2 - 3 seasons...then storing it for 6 years is STUPID if you look at the cost per trip.......he should have sold it while it was still worth something like after season 2 of sitting...
whatever.......nows its a nice new unused boat covered with dust and bird poo....flat tires...bad gas, dead batteries.....etc etc....

thats just my opinion.

that being said if you don't ride a Harley you ain't really a biker
:p: just kiddin

You're a hoot.:)

The thing about opinions, we do all have em, but it works out better when I limit mine to opinions about me, not other people,

because my opinion of others is usually rooted in anger or fear and theres little rationale behind it, it only makes sense to other people who are stuck in their own fear like me.

Anyway, if you get a feeling that you're talking to a brick wall trying to get through to the BL , take solace in this;

Its better to understand than to be understood.

I find when I stop trying to change people they start to hear what I'm saying.

What?:D

Life changes people's interests... It is a shame that their boat was turned into a hanger queen so to speak. Someone will get quite a deal on a boat one day that spent it's life in dry storage. What marina is this stored at again? ;)

jkust - We're going on your boat this weekend your treat since you have 43k laying around. If you have that in your checking account you should probably think about investing it. (Unless you're monthly expenses are 10x what mine are then you probably need that much in there as your safety net).

I'm only 29 and I wish I could save/invest more but I just don't make enough $$ in my career to do this. I save what I can and feel good about where I'm at (if I compare myself to my friends at my age I'm above par, but a lot of them have little to no financial responsibility). I love it when they give me advice too. If I listened to everything they said I wouldn't be where I'm at today.

Nice 401k, 2 roths, 6plex rental, townhome rental and my personal home (Rentals still have notes). Then I have the liabilities, 4 cars, motorcycle and boat. I don't have any kids soo I think that might be where I get my money for the liabilities (toys).

You need to enjoy life...as young as possible too...there's only so much time we get on this place we call earth.

One thing that bugs irritates me:
I despise people who are only relying on social security when they retire. Social Security income's function is to supplement your own retirement fund...it's purpose is not to be someone's sole retirement income.

You haven't got the things that count.

Not everything that counts can be counted.
And most of the stuff that can be counted doesn't count.
Its just usefull.:)
