30 hp evinrude pull primer

i have a 1991 30 hp evinrude that will not idle with primer pushed completely in--is this normal? :)

No.I suspect you have one or more carbs with restricted low speed passages or jets.The primer being open is compensating for the fuel that your carburetors is not allowing through.

Thanks ob<br />there is only one carb and it has a very small fuel line that is split off the primer line and attaches to the top of carb--where I thought the low speed needle valve was located. No gas comes through line with primer closed completely is that the way it should be?

Not to jump the post, but no, when the primer has no power to it, you should not have any fuel going through it, although fuel will be present at the primer and ready to use, if needed. I hope this is what you are asking.... BTW- OB is correct. When you have to keep the primer open for it to run, you have a blockage in the carbs or the float is partially stuck closed. Rebuild it and clean the passages out with carb cleaner and blow them out with compressed air. The primer shoots fuel directly into the cylinders and that's why it continues to run when it is partially open..
